Newbie

#1

Post by breadloafdeluxe »

My Dad passed away a couple of years ago of a heart attack (71 yrs old) I'm finishing up the 3rd. incarnation of his 49 Pan. he owned since the mid 50s. Everything's dialed in for it to start, theirs no more play in the centrifical timer to advance any farther. Seems to need about an 1/8 in. more play counter clockwise to static time. I'm thinking the the timer is stabbed in wrong. I know a V8 can be 180 out and my old VWs only go in one way. So can the timer go in the case a tooth or two off?
Thanks,
David K.

david,

first, welcome to the forum!

and yes they can be installed one tooth off. easy to fix, set your timing mark then pull the timer and rotate in the desired direction and reset the timing.

nice looking bike!

I pulled the cam cover off and lined all the marks up, got the vertical line on the flywheel straight up and down I know I have the front piston on the ignite stroke. If I could turn the timer 1/8th in. farthert counter clockwise I can get the points to spark and have a starting point. That's why I think I need to reset the timer.

1962 caddy, kids call it the Bat Cycle. My brother in law did that for Pop. Said he had about 30 hrs in the fender 15 to paint and flame the frame and tank. I have a Fat Bob fender for later. I'm going down to the shop tomorrow and dick with the timing wish me luck. I should get this thing firing tomorrow after sitting in the folks garage for 12yrs!
