Re: Powder coating exhaust pipes
Got a good friend who does ceramic coating on guns. He just finished up one of my 45s. He has colors that actually look like can and parkerized finishing. Thinking about using him for my exhaust because I cannot see the difference in the HD high temp silver and one of the ceramic finishes he has available.
Think that powdercoating is too thick; the ceramic is measured in micro size

Re: Powder coating exhaust pipes
Bob!
I am certain that conventional powdercoating will burn off.
Flatties have a hard time keeping it over their exhaust ports.
My preferred powdercoater, now out of business, applied what he called "alumacoat", which appears to be a sintered layer of aluminum, as if sprayed on at enormous temperatures. A wheel brush won't take it off, so I imagine it could be layed on heavy, and satined.
Please ask your powdercoater is he is familiar with such a process. I have a pair of Knuck hillclimber heads begging for it!

This might be something like you are looking for, I have used similar products in the past that seamed to work well. The price is right and can be had in different colors.

Ceramic coat is the way to go. Especially if the finish can be matched.
I've had my exhaust ceramic coated over two years ago. Done over 10,000kms. Still looks as good as the day I put it on.
Cheers

Re: Powder coating exhaust pipes
Ceramic coatings have been used in the automotive industry for headers for years. The process isn't cheap, but from what I understand it is very effective, and from what I have seen it also looks good. I've seem claims that it lasts the life of the part, but cannot attest to whether it does or doesn't....bosheff

Re: Powder coating exhaust pipes
Bob, he uses a product called cerakote. I will ask him about the cost. Coating the parts came up in our discussion when I was thinking about cad and parkerized finishing and longevity of finished parts.
Disassembled my headlight in order to take some dents out of the shell, have it chromed and refinish the mounting plates. OEM is a cad finish. Going to have him refinish in cerakote to get an idea of how it will come out. Will post some pics
Vladt, can you post some pics?

Re: Powder coating exhaust pipes
If you use the VHT header paint should you use the primer then the paint or would the paint stay on without the primer. I've been thinking of painting my pipes also.Hubbard wrote:VHT 2000 degree header paint stays on, I've got about 6000 miles on it. Comes in silver, red ,black,& primer. Advance carries it.

Re: Powder coating exhaust pipes
we have dyno headers ceramic coated (v-8 headers) that have thousands of dyno pulls on them with exhaust temps sometimes up to 1500 degrees without a chip or a flake yet to come off they keep the heat in the pipe too

Re: Powder coating exhaust pipes
I’m a little lost here. Is this the company that applies it or just the manufacture? Bob
