? about stock panhead exhaust system

Post by longhorn »

Can anybody shoot me a pic of where the front header pipe is clamped to the frame, and how they are clamped together?
Should the lip be up on the exhaust port/header pipe clamp?
I have a mutt 64, in a "restored" swingarm frame.
I had to weld on a tab for the squish pipe, how is the muffler attached?
Does the muffler clamp end's, face down, or up?
The bike had a set of tuned pipes, I'm putting it back to "stock".
Thanks
Jim

A pan exhaust has four clamps.
1st and 2nd clamp sit back to back near end of front pipe, one clamp on pipe, one clamp on frame, bolt thru both clamps..
3rd clamp attached to front of muffler and frame.
4th clamp attached to muffler (2/3 back) and frame.

The clamps go behind the brake pedal plate just above the front engine mount. They are bolted together with the bolt head from above.

Yes, it should be.

The Y pipe to squish pipe has no clamp, slip fit only. The muffler clamps to the y pipe with a standard clamp, the bolt side goes down!
The rear clamp goes to the support rod with the bolt below.

Robbie;
Where the y pipe, and the muffler come together, there's a clamp. I have the bolt down, part.
Is this attached to the bracket that the tranny is mounted to, or am I going to have to get the welder out again?
Thanks

The bolt for the Y-pipe to muffler clamp is a long one and goes all the way through the frame and support bracket with a spacer between the clamp and support bracket tube!

Robbie;
I've got the exhaust through to the y pipe/muffler.
I need the muffler support bracket to continue.
Is the 65 bracket the same?
I'll make something for now, but will look for the correct one.
Also my frame does not have the forward hole on the frame(been welded over), is this where the y pipe to muffler bracket would go?
That frame to front header pipe connection, had kind of a "sweet spot" where everything actually fit pretty good.
I was thinking the whole system was cobbled right from the start, but once you tighten everything up, she's pretty secure. :D
Thanks again

Unless your doing it to be correct,you only need the clamp on the muffler to the Y pipe and the muffler to frame in back.The rest of the pipes aint going anywhere once you bolt the squish pipe to the frame.

Thanks again guy's, I've got her pretty much sewed up.
You do need a muffler bracket though, this is a swingarm frame.
I'm guessin on a rigid I could bolt her right to the frame, but not with the swingarm, not enough flex in the pipe. :?

Without the muffler support arm and only a clamp holding things together it will only be a short time until your muffler passes you on the inside of that right hander!!
With the arm missing you are just wasting money on mufflers!
