s&s super b on my 64 pan

#1

Post by 1947ul »

ok i just installed an s&s super b on my 64 pan . i followed the instructions but i think im miss understanding the part where they say turn the mixture screw in until the bike is about to stall then back out until stall . i get the screw in to where its about to stall but when I'm turning it out and counting the the turns i get nothing, i can turn the screw all the way out. what does this mean to rich ? manifold leak ? need a smaller jet ? if so which one intermediate or main ? also should there be a insulator between carb and manifold ?
thanks, dan

Yes, there should be an insulator block between carb and manifold.

You should reach a point when you turn the mixture screw out where it starts to run rough. Ive never encountered a situation where it didn't with my B.

What intermediate jet are you running?

Have you tested for manifold leak?

Is it a known good B?

Screw the mixture screw all the way out and check to see if it has barber-poled at all.

B's can be particularly finnicky when old. The holes in the carb body that hold the throttle shaft can wear...that can cause idling problems.

I will give you my drill on adjusting a B. All of this is done at idle.

1. Start with the mix screw about 3/4 to 1 turn out.
2. Fire the bike and bring to normal operating temp.
3. Stand the bike up straight and begin to back the mix screw out.
4. Continue backing out until you see wisps of black smoke coming from the exhaust. (This is best done in a shady area as it makes the small amount of smoke easier to see.)
5. After you see a small amount of black smoke from the exhaust run the mix screw back in about 1/2 to 3/4 turn.

Ideally you want to be out about 2 turns on the mix screw.

If you are out more than 2 1/2 turns on the mix screw and no smoke you need to increase the size on the intermediate jet. If you are less than 1 1/2 turns when you see the smoke you will need a smaller intermediate.

If you have used new mounting hardware you might also want to check the shaft the butterfly bolts to as a source for intake leak. These tend to get worn and will allow air passage around the shaft. I usually spray a little carb cleaner around the shaft area and listen for a change in the motor sound to help diagnose an air leak around the shaft.

I hope this helps and it will work for any S&S carb.

Your jet size should be around a .28-.295 intermediate and around 68-70 on the main.

It's gonna bog if you whack the throttle. There's no accelarator pump in a "B". You have to roll on the throttle. Get an "E" if you wanna whack the throttle.

By chance are you leaving your enrichener up and encountering the bogging?

If so, as soon as you get it started and idling, close the enrichener and turn up the idle speed.

Get that enrichener closed once its idling :!: .
