YELLOW FLOAT IN LINKERT
My linkert has the yellow float in it . I soaked it in paint thinner for 6 months or so to clean the carb up . Its been out of the thinner now for 3 months or so ,but I think it was soggy when I took it out of the thinner ,is this what I should expect? I heard yellow floats dont work with our nowdays gas.
My second linkert had a black float with scunge around it too, The brownish black scunge is still there after the soaking beside the one with the yellow float ( also for 6 mos.) .
Should I scrap them both? or is there hope yet?
Neil

Neil!
Lacquer thinner may not be the best choice of soak.
The off-white to yellow floats were originally marketed by Gary Bang, and then assimilated by V-TWIN.
In their catalog it states that they are not for use with oxygenated fuels, which makes them worthless in the USA.
Normally they soften and swell into a dumpling quickly.
Your crusty black float probably has four little round casting dots on top. These were the OEM "Armstrongs", which do not soften, however do swell in size to where a heatlamp must be used to remove it from the bowl.
There has been a flood of different floats on the market over the last four years, nearly all of which use an obsolete material. The latest material used by all modern auto companies is guarded by a stiff royalty for the rights to cast it, so it is only found as machined examples, and not in any catalog.

Bad floats are cheap no doubt. Brasses are offered for as little as $5.87.
But "good" floats are a whole lot more.
And the best are pocket change more than that.
(When shipping is considered, the best may actually be less!)
It may be necessary, but ~$40 ain't cheap.

Neil!
I cut seven different varieties of floats for vintage American motorcycles;
Information on fuels only comes my way when there is a problem, and basically, fuels have not been as digestive the last few years. The most recent reports of ultra-digestive fuel were from the Pacific Northwest USA, however, and you may share the same pipelines and sources.

Re: YELLOW FLOAT IN LINKERT
Compared to the headaches a stuck or deteriorated float can cause even $40.00 for a high quality reliable replacement would be well worth the price. I just can't see any good coming from trying to scrape scum off of an old used float. Just the process mentioned of soaking them & trying to clean them is most likely going to destroy any integrity they may have had left. So I stand by my original reply, trash them & get a new one.

Re: YELLOW FLOAT IN LINKERT
I just happen to have one of those "Yellow" floats. Mine is doing really well... Laying in one of the top drawers on my tool box. I figured it was a waste of time and just an accident waiting to happen. I got one of Mr. Cottons floats.

Amen John,
My WLA's got one, and I have a spare that I am going to be using on my M-74.
