Linkert Carb Tuning

#1

Post by dccobra »

Question probably asked a thousand times. I have a '59 Panhead all stock all original survivor. True duals original cigar mufflers. Adjusting low speed needle
how far from 5 turns out should carb start to "tune in" ? Should it be within clicks or full turns? Seems no matter how far in or out runs rich. Puffs black smoke
on idle but clears on acceleration.

dccobra---If no Leaks when Bubbletested,--I would suspect the float. If it wobbles excessivly side to side Then it can get hung-up on the bowl.Fingers take abuse over the years. If you dont straighten her out/I can suggest Cottens Floats!/// There are alot of guys running them & with similar problems as yours.Cottens Floats have cured alot of Misery Just as you describe. There will be others with Great info for ya!----Respectfully----Richie

Richie, Thanks for the info. Will disasseble carb tonight and check float. Have already check manifold for leaks. If the need arises how can I source a Cotton float. Thanks Again,Dean

"Should it be within clicks or full turns?" I have a stock 62 pan and 4 to 5 clicks either way on low speed needle gets it out of adjustment enough to make for hard starting and run bad.

The low speed on most bikes works well at around 2-1/2 to 3 turns. 5 is a VERY rough baseline.
As stated, check your bowl. Make sure your main noxxle spring is intact and holding the nozzle up and the jet is in place.
