Post by rockhound »

Need help with my M-36 on my '49 FL. There are no jets...just two plugs?

The main nozzle I feel is going up too far Into the venturi. The spring below it..stock length disappear's, so the bottom cap doesn't even come into play here with any tension.

Getting the bike back together.... but the carb is giving me fits!

Yes, your M-36 did not use a fixed jet, and its HS needle has a wide angle.

The nozzle must be firm against the venturi, and seal against it, if it can.
Your model uses the longest length of spigot, so it is hard to imagine one altered to go further.

The spring must have great tension, so you need a fresh spring, at least.

If the carb still gives fits even when reasonably in order, then the manifold must be suspect.

Good luck!

Thank's Cotten!

I put the nozzle back in this morning before work....and it
bottomed out nicely, with the spring showing about 3/8".

So now I have some pressure to keep the nozzle in place, but
I swear that sucker went further up with the spring behind
it.....and doing a disappearing act!

I'll try posting a pic of my nozzle.....maybe you can tell
me if it's the correct unit.

It should look like the one on the right, I think.

Thank's Cotten!

It does look like the right nozzle.
I posted a pick of mine.... you can see it on the front
page. I forgot how to link the pic from the album, to the
forum page.

Its a little fuzzy, but you can see where your nozzle's spigot has worn upon the venturi hole:
SPGTWEAR.jpg
Ideally, you can carefully prep and sweat soft solder over the region, and then carve and burnish it to a mated fit into your venturi.
This will help preserve the nozzle's accelerator "sump" effect, the loss of which has given Linkert's reputation much grief in the barnyard consensus, and in the barroom buzz as well.

(I take a short-cut and use a thin PEEK seal washer.)

The fit of your venturi into the carb body is a similar concern, but remedied in another manner entirely.

Can you see daylight around it?

Been awhile since I've messed with this sucker!
There is minor light around the venturi.
Put a J&P carb kit in the M-36 awhile back and now I have
gas pouring out a vent hole.
Petcock does shut off 100%......but when opened.....all the flood gates
open up!
I have a 1/4" on the float.....could my new brass float be the issue?

Most brass floats don't float. And if it is one of the crappy ones (typical for J&P stuff) it is likely the wrong size and hangs up in the bowl. Get one of Cotten's (Liberty Motorcycle Specialties) or a Rubber Ducky (http://www.enfieldracing.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and make it function correctly.

Cotten!

The nozzle pictured on the right is that the 1258-40? Palmer's sez that one has a lowered shoulder for a gasket. Do you know why that particular nozzle was designed to use a gasket and do you provide one on your rebuilds?

Well it look's like a float ( good one) is in order.
Anybody know if one will be available at Davenport this weekend?
