Chrome solid wheels or covers

#1

Post by Sausage »

Hello:

I find these Chrome Wheel or possibly Chrome Wheel Covers really cool.

Image

To the best of your knowledge were they?

1) Solid Wheels or Covers?

2) Factory optional or Aftermarket.

3) Specific to Front End only?

Thank you again.

If you go to the book section of this site and find Greg Fields excellent book on Knuckleheads, you will see that the Knuckle on the cover is fitted with solid wheels. The wheels were made by the Wolfe Wheel Company in Akront, Ohio. They are solid wheels, not covers, made by welding the wheel disc and rim onto the original H-D hub. I don't know if they are the same as the wheels in your photos, there may have been other manufacturers doing similar stuff.

I just had a closer look at the photo of the 65 Electra Glide (the other photo is not coming up). It is not easy to make out, but I think this is a bolt on wheel trim. I've only seen these on front wheels. I think they are an aftermarket item. Maybe somebody with more experience can tell you more.

Dave's right, the '65 has a vintage aftermarket bolt-on cover.
I believe they may be stainless. All I can tell you beyond that is that everybody wants one.

don't know - looks more conical perhaps.
didn't check diameters or anything, but just thought I'd point it out quickly.
Have also posted with another link to the turn signals you mentioned in your other post.
