Hole locations for saddlebag halfmoon plates on a 54

#1

Post by alfajuj »

I'm adding leather saddlebags with halfmoon plates to my 54 and I was wondering if anyone knows the standard location of the holes.
The first hole closest to the hinged section is the one I need and the other 3 will follow that.
How high up from the lip and how far forward of the hinged section should it be?
I couldn't find it in the first edition of Palmer's book and I've searched all over the internet but haven't been able to find any info on this. I'm hoping someone here on this site can enlighten me. Thanks!

I may have a schematic that I drew some years back that I will try to find. I had a pair of original half moon brackets but one had been cut off (bobber?). I ordered a set of bags from Heather's Leathers that came with brackets. The holes didn't line up so he sent me a pair without holes that I drilled myself. I guess what I'm saying is that if you don't have holes in your fender, you can make them fit with the brackets you get.

The halfmoon plates already have the holes. I mean I need to drill the holes in my fender.
I guess I could just eyeball it from looking at period factory photos and get it pretty close, but I was hoping to know if there was some standard dimension for locating the first hole. Then I can just use the plate itself as the template for the other 3. If I get the first one right, then the others will be ok. But I also need to make sure that the tilt is correct as well. Does it tilt one way or the other?

I measured from the hinged fender seam or edge, to the furthest back saddle bag hole, one inch.
The bottom measurement, hole to lip of fender one and one eight inch.
Hope that helps.
