12 Volt Battery in 6 Volt Tank.

#1

Post by 1964 pan »

Right now I be running a V-Twin AGM #53-0549 12 volt battery. 4-1/2x2-3/4x4-1/4. Its gettin weak. It has conventional posts. Not spade terminals like the ES12-12 mentioned in another thread. Any one know of a better battery? It would be nice if someone made a 12 volt replacement, size wise, as the 6 volt. Thanks.

The 12n5-5a-3b battery is made and sold by many sources, even the widespread Interstate franchises, which makes warranty convenient if necessary.

No matter what the quality, I suggest a new one every spring, as they are cheaper than armatures.

V-TWIN offers a convenient steel box to support and insulate the small battery with an airspace.
(The heat of the oil tank can cause the small batteries to overcharge and boil out, diminishing its life. CycleElectric offers low-volatage regulators to remedy this problem.)

Good luck!

Take a look at this thread. I also placed a link to a Battery question in the Knowledge base.

I use the YTX5L-B sealed batteries from Apex Batteries. You can tape two of them together (each is a 5 AH battery), and they will fit perfect in the horseshoe tank (well, a little shorter than the H2). They are about $40 each, get about two years out of them. I've spent twice as much on the Interstate version of the same battery, didn't last any longer. Oh, and I do run the CE low charge rate gen/reg combo.

RussW!

Interstate's 12n5.5a-3b has a suggested retail of only $27.75

Perhaps I need a new price schedule. They haven't been by to check their inventory lately!

Cotton, that's because I bought only the finest Interstate Cycle-tron II, 70CCA, 4AH, AGM Sealed Forever Advanced Technology , CYTX5L-BS Retail Price $77.95 battery. I had the gratification of knowing that I was holding in my hands one of the best dead batteries money could buy!

Whew Russ!

At that price, I'll stick with the tried-and-true Taiwanese doodoo.

Right you are! My 5 lb. Interstate paperweight has, right below the colorful "Interstate Cycletron II" sticker with the picture of the zooming red sportbike, the clear markings "Made in Taiwan". Live and learn...

Thanks Russ, I needed a chuckle this morning!

FWIW, I feel that any battery will last longer in an oil tank if you can get some cooling air in there.
I made a louvered battery/oil tank cover for my pan, during it's last incarnation, which theoretically created a low pressure area on top, and pulled air in the bottom, but when I go for the more original look, I'll probably try to find an unobtrusive way to duct cool air into the bottom.

For my Panhead, I'm using the battery below in a genuine H-D wraparound tank. And I'm running a 1983 Sportster generator and an Accel solid state regulator. I bought the battery new in September 2008 but I don't know how many miles I've done and my Pan hasn't been my main road bike for some years. The battery is 4-7/16" wide, 2-3/4" thick and 5-1/8" high. It didn't come with the SS socket head cap screws though; I supplied them myself. 8) Eric
