Springer horn covers

#1

Post by Robert Luland »

This is a dumb question but I got to ask it. I got two OEM springer horn covers in my hand as I'm writing this. One is brass and the other tin. When did they stop making one and start the other. I know this isn't on the level of the chicken and the egg thing but its close. Bob

Robert
Are you sure its solid brass? Stick a magnet to it and tell us what happens. I'd almost bet that its a steel cover that had been chromed and then bead blasted until the chrome came off and the copper flash over the steel was showing. Do the magnet test and let us know.

The stamped brass covers were always chromed, never raw. They were made just like the eagle fender tips, stamped, polished, plated. The steel ones were painted. And they existed at the same time, one does not supersede the other. It depended on the package the bike came with. Many steel ones have been plated over the years by owners dressing up their bikes. They usually show polishing damage such as rounded edges and a not so crisp stamping.

Oh, and factory hubs often have runs on them!

Rob, I don't think the factory sprayed them, far to labor intensive. They were dipped. I was thinking of doing the same thing. I have a range in the shop and I was going to heat the paint to about 180 to 200 degrees so it would just flow off but the price of paint right know makes the idea prohibitive. I ended up using a very small gravity feed spot gun which made it much easier to get in to the crevices with out the runs.

thanks for the update Robert, I have a pile of old covers in the shop, magnet test tomorrow!

I just went throught the same hub painting thing, VL hubs are much easier to paint than star-hubs.
