thanks for the info on the frame tab back in december!
i have a 2 unit delco. i am running on my bike ala 1958 style. i could not make it fit without adding an extension to the 58 and up bracket. i did not discover this until i put stock oil lines on my bike. it is just a piece of sheet metal with 4 holes drilled in it.
of course i will shoot some pics if you need them.
my current project is to construct a solid state regulator that will fit inside the original cutout relay body. my goal is to have a regulator that acts like a 2 brush unit but fits inside the 3 brush cutout body.
so far the prototype is up and running on the bench, i am going to install it and see if i can make it work in a real world enviroment.
i cannot take credit as i have gotten the basic schematic from frankenstien on the FHP forum, and loads of help from my younger brother who is an electrical engineer at intel.
at any rate let me know if i can help you out with your project!

I'm at a lost here. Does a 57 fl use a relay on the top of the right case or is there a regulator stuck some where? The photo recomended in the above post is some one trying to fit something where its not suyppost to go. I have a braket that fits over the coil on the left side of the bike with extention bolts but this has to be for police use do to the fact that the regulator would have to huge in size to span the mount. The '57 still uses the relay and 32E or radio gen.Does a 57 fl use a relay on the top of the right case or is there a regulator stuck some where?
The volt. reg. I'm using goes with the '59 motor. I don't like relays so much, unless it's Knuckle - then I like the relay and 32E.
I like the voltage reg. internals hidden under a relay case idea though. Then you could Heli-coil a CycleElectric (they actually make a heli-coil model) 61A and go along with reliable 1958 electrics.
But, I also like the external oil filter on the rigid Pan and the V.R. stuck in there too flipped 180-degrees.
Sorry no pics of a real 1955 era set up. There ought to be. There ought to be sectionals of the entire machine. Cable clamps, wiring terminal boards, etc. Every square inch.

you are correct about the over the coil mount.
that would be for police use and it would mount a 3 unit regulator, not unlike the ones used in cars in the 50's. it is quite large.
stock it would have had the relay mounted on the right side. just infront of the timer. that would be for a 3 brush generator.
that is why i am trying to develop a regulator to fit in the old relay, it will look "stock" but give the benefit of being able to run a 2 brush generator.
if you have access to palmer's book it shows both types of regulators vs. a relay set up.
