6 Volt Voltage Regulator
I hesitate to ask this, anticipating getting lambasted but here goes.
Can I use a Delco Regulator from an old Farmall tractor for my 60 Panhead.
It looks like I might be able to find one the same size as the original on my Pan, and I can use my chrome cover to make it look original.
Thanks.

Re: 6 Volt Voltage Regulator
automotive/tractor regulators have the incorrect resistors for motorcycle use.
it will overcharge your battery. the base charging rate is too high.
not a bad question, I thought it was a good idea too until I looked into it further... if you could transplant the resistors from the back of the regulator it could work.

HD-USA,
TRY CHECKING WITH TOMS NOS PARTS. A FEW YEARS BACK I PURCHASED ONE FROM THEM. LOOK ON THE BODY, BY ONE OF THE MOUNTING HOLES, THERE SHOULD BE A MODEL NUMBER, TRY TO MATCH THAT NUMBER. I STILL HAVE MY STOCK ORIGINAL ONE IF YOU NEED THE NUMBER.

Re: 6 Volt Voltage Regulator
I have tried the Accel regulators, they usually last about 2 years and the point contacts in them fail.Panacea wrote:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Harley-Davidson ... 66&vxp=mtr
If you can get your hands on a real Delco unit they usually can be cleaned up and adjusted to work for many seasons. As with any mechanical device they need periodic maintenance.

Re: 6 Volt Voltage Regulator
My original unit failed on my 64 about five years ago, I found a new unit back then on e-bay for $45 bucks. Never know what will turn up. John, I did save my original reg. Do you think it would be worth sending it to someone to see if it just needs a clean and adjust? Mike

Re: 6 Volt Voltage Regulator
Thanks John, Tony, 4pans1man and Panacea.
My pan is so original I'd really like to keep the Regulator original if I could. I just had the generator rebuilt, and it still didn't charge, so I rode the bike over to the generator rebuilder for him to take a look.
I took the Regulator cover off, and the generator rebuilder closed the points. The engine slowed down a little, and the guy said "now the generator's working. The problem is in the regulator." Makes sense to me.
If anybody has worked on a regulator, or can point me in the right direction to send it to somebody, I sure would appreciate it.
Thanks again for advising against using the Farmall Regulator!

Re: 6 Volt Voltage Regulator
HDchevy,
Here is what I would do:
Get the regulator that Panacea recommended. Run it so you can enjoy the rest of the summer. It will fail sooner or later...
Meanwhile, give this to your generator guy https://www.hydra-glide.net/phpBB3/view ... 101&t=6792 see if he can tune up your stock regulator.
If your regulator is beyond repair start shopping. They are cheap so you won't be risking much as most folks do not know how to service them.
Glad you got it figured out!
