6 Volt Electronic Regulator - Samwell Supplies Netherlands

#1

Post by gitguy »

Has anyone any experience with this?

http://www.v-tronic.com/products/6-volt ... -regulator

This electronic voltage regulator is designed to work with a converted 2 brush 32E generator with maximum current output of 10 Amps.

The voltage regulator fits best on motor cycles where the cut-out relay type 74750-38 (old nr. 4785-38) was used. The 45″and UL sidevalves and knuckles used this type, but also some other models used this cut-out relay.

Please read various service manuals on how to convert standard 6 Volt three brush into a 2 brush generator.

Features:

High output current: 9-10 amp
Accurate voltage regulation: 7,0-7,1 Volt under variable loads
Current overload protection (10 amps)
Temperature compensated
Solid state device
Easy installation

Identical look as the original 6 Volt cut-out relay when cover is installed; no one will notice the conversion to 6 Volt electronic regulator

They're great. I've been using them for more than a decade (both their 12V and their 6V versions) when converting a generator to two brush or 12 volt. Very highly recommended.

Be careful where you source these from. You only want the one manufactured by V-Tronic and distributed by Samwel. Tom's NOS Parts and RetroCycle are the only two sources I know of in the US.

perry,

thanks! looks like toms has it http://www.tomsnosparts.com/cgi-bin/dbs ... r=R8375-47" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

next question, how does it interact with the generator light? is it done the same as a relay or do you modify the circuit to act like a '65 and up 2 brush?

Thanks for all the replies - this is all good gouge!
Now I am going to re-jigger my 32E for 2 brush operations.

$110.00 from Tom's NOS.

Marc,
Tom's is a good parts source. His prices are fair and his service is speedy. He's also one of my neighbors :) .

I measured between 6.95 V and 7.05V with lights off and on and various rpm

John, if you have the relay you must modify your wiring
The regulator comes with installation instructions included the wiring

After converting the 32E to two brush, you attach the generator light wire to the moral equivalent of the generator A terminal a la 58 and up wiring. If you experience dieseling (run on after the switch is turned off), the generator bulb is allowing too much juice to pass and you'll need to change bulbs (the factory did change the dash bulbs because of this (in very original 58s it's is not uncommon to see the oil light the usual old tall tube #44 bulb and the generator light a round globe bulb (whose number escapes me now). Later all the dash bulbs were the round style).

Thanks Perry!

that is exactly how i run my '55 now with a delco 2 unit. I have the small bulbs with no run on problems.

Seems it will be a easy swap and more original looking, currently i have a model 52 converted to 2 brush on the bike. I tried to build my own a couple of years back but had difficulty getting the transistor to heat sink properly. It did not last very long, mostly i believe because i did not limit the current to 10 amps like the netherlands model.

Yep, I've purchased from Tom many times. His prices are more than reasonable, quality high, shipping quick. One of the better sources.

Cheers,

Marc
