6 volt horn 1961

#1

Post by armentrout »

I found out my 61 has been converted to 12 volt. The horn is not on it now but I have the trumpet and the "power pack" horn. Is there any way to tell if it's a 6 volt horn or a 12 volt by appearance? I can post a pic if needed.

The factory never offered that horn set up as a 12V, so if it's a 12V it'll be aftermarket. I'm pretty certain, but not 100% though, that the aftermarket people would have marked what it was. If there's nothing stamped on it, more than likely a 6V, but the marking may have been taken off. Hook it up and have a listen, if it's louder than hell it'll be 6V.

The material that the rubberized mount on the power pack is made of was much more heavy duty on the original than the repo packs. My stock 6 volt pack used a material like the thick-fibered floor board pads were made from, the new repro mount is more "rubber" like and has not lasted nearly as long. I have been using the 6 volt pack on my 12 volt system for many years, has not seemed to hurt it. It is, like mentioned in the previous post , loud as hell!

I put a 6 volt horn on my 91 springer back in 96, it is louder on the 12 volt system than with 6 volt battery. Still works after many years.
