How to remove the fuel rod

OK, I'm giving up with no help from the manuals. I'm going to get the tins painted, but for the life of me can't figure out how to get the fuel rod out. It has a split pin you can see from the cap opening, but can't seem to figure this out, I have the chrome cober on the end of the rod, but I don't see anything to unscrew to let it out the bottom. Am I missing something? Also, the fabulous tool used to align everything back afterwards, how do you do that without the tool. Leads would be appreciated in advance.

After the knob is removed, you should be able to gently tap the rod down through the top seal and remove it out the bottom of the tank (after the valveseat has been removed of course.)

Re-assembly tip: Use copper crushwashers from the carb bowl instead of the unforgiving brass seals on the valveseat.

So the rod is removed thru the lower hole? how do I remove the knob on top?

The topmost knob is to pull the rod up, as noted only a machine screw holds it in place. The small knob underneath (on the top of the tank) holds a spring a flat washer, and packing washer, very much like the stem of an old fashioned water faucet. It merely screws off the tank, but there is no mechanical connection to the rod. Soak it well with penetrating oil as most of them are rusted in place. Grab it with needle nose vise grips and work gently and carefully as it is easy to screw up the paint. The pin in the rod just stops its upward motion when you put it in reserve position. It isn't holding anything in. The rod and the complete valve come out the bottom of the tank.

Looks like someone used an old cupboard drawer knob in place of the screw. I would try holding the knurled part (original knob) and see if that pull knob will unscrew.

That knob is factory accessory #91690-49. Hold the bottom knurled part and unscrew the acc. knob.

Not trying to be smart here, but if your going to maintain old iron
you need to have a Spare Parts book, Service manual, assorted accessory books,
any reading material that would pertain to Panheads. They are out there and also here.
Sooner or later your going to need info or pictures of how to fix whats going to break next.

Hi Tom, I have seen guys use a drawer pull to do the same thing as the real H-D part. Colony makes a nice repop of it,
but it is heavy and makes it hard to keep reserve on.
