Fuel Petcock Adapter
With all the issues with bad gas etc, I'm very concerned about the reliability of the fuel shutoff rod. I have dreams of " Lassie, get Pa, the barns on fire!" As my bike is not a restoration project I'm considering this adapter from Pingle. It would allow me to keep all my existing stock steel fuel lines and crossover banjo. Has anyone seen or used one of these?

Re: Fuel Petcock Adapter
The tip is aluminum, the seat is brass, your grass may be bad but the seat will be ok.

Disconnect fuel line and see if it leaks, if it leaks replace the rod and seat.barns on fire !!!!!

Scrap!
A simple hardware store inline valve in a spare steel line would be a lot cheaper.
The Pingle is longer, so an original line would have to be shortened.

Re: Fuel Petcock Adapter
I can get it to seal out of the tank. Needs some alignment tweaking installed....and I just don't trust it. I assume my tip is original and it's magnetic so it's not aluminum, made me curious and I have access to a metal analyzer. If anyone cares it's a steel alloy, has a little copper, zinc, lead and some trace elements, the balance is 92% iron... The rod is ordinary carbon steel. Someone thought the tip was Monel, but it has virtually no nickle in it.1950Panhead wrote:The tip is aluminum, the seat is brass, your grass may be bad but the seat will be ok.Disconnect fuel line and see if it leaks, if it leaks replace the rod and seat.barns on fire !!!!!

(The real question is why).
Maybe I should make some out of Monel.
(That was supposedly L&L's choice for floatvalve needles.)
Its cheaper than PEEK, but infinitely harder to machine.

Re: Fuel Petcock Adapter
Well, I wasn't going to mention your name, but you were the someone who thought it was Monel in a previous post and that's what motivated me to test it. If anyone is curious about what something metal is made of, send me a PM, if I can "shoot" it, I'll let you know.Cotten wrote:Of course somebody cares, Scrap!Scrap wrote: .... Re: Fuel Petcock Adapter
I have the pingel setup with adaptor on my 60 FL. It works well, but your reserve is about a quart, due to the added length of the adapter. I met Carl Olsen in Davenport and he makes a peek tipped shutoff rod. I plan on re-installing the original shutoff with one of these this winter.

Re: Fuel Petcock Adapter
What did you use for the crossover and the carb? Flex hose or steel or copper fuel lines? Are you planning on re-installing the original cause it's original or due to the reserve issue. Does the Pingle look really out of place?vmoheat wrote:I have the pingel setup with adaptor on my 60 FL. It works well, but your reserve is about a quart, due to the added length of the adapter. Re: Fuel Petcock Adapter
I use a steel crossover and rubber fuel line to the S&S carb (another story). I would like to change back for both reasons. I like original and the reserve issue. also, sometimes finding reserve on the pingel can be difficult when your riding down the road. Hope this helps.

SCRAP!---I have installed the Pingel on a shovel & all works good!, As Heat mentioned the reserve is less!-& It does look out of place (so to say). If the rest of your bike is mostly oem, then you really wont be happy with this set-up. But I cant putdown the FLOW! IT will keep a S&S-B carb. full at a steady 100MPH down the PKWY. The motor is also a stroker-(96in.)---Just my 2 on it!-----RICHIE

Re: Fuel Petcock Adapter
Thanks for the feedback. I have my original working very well at the moment. It was suggested that i renew the tip on my lathe. But as a trial, I took a 90 degree vee block, packed some Clover Brand type "A" valve grinding compound in the vee, put the fuel rod in an electric hand drill and polished the tip, stuffed some compound in the seat of the valve and lapped that as well. Success! Passed the suck test. I'm still a little skeptical as to how long it will last. The suggestion that I use a simple petcock in the line is a thrifty solution, but I'm a bit ham handed and i don't want to keep flexing the line every time I open and close it unless I fab some kind of bulkhead bracket on the valve.

It looks too simple, but I'll try it if I can somehow make it more complicated.Cotten wrote:Scrap!

You gotta be a aircraft engineer/designer.....
I attended a Sikorsky-US Army AMCOM meeting here in Germany one year.............and heard the EXACT same thing from one of the engineers, when he questioned about the flight controls on a UH-60 Blackhawk!
I am sure he was just being a smartass at the time, since most of them did not have patience, nor a sense of humor.. to match what the mechanics and inspectors had.
Sorry..... just had to comment on your reply

Re: Fuel Petcock Adapter
Just installed a shut off like Cotten pictured. I used 1/4 brake line and bent a new gas line. Save the original for when I find an OEM shut off.
