Refurb rear brake Side Plate Assembly 41650-63
I've got a -63 rear side plate that needs the anchor stud 41720-63 replaced. As you can see. its been cut off.
Has anyone ever done this repair?
The only way I see the old anchor stud coming out is by cutting out the 4 large rivets in the second picture, so the outer plate that holds the stud in place can be removed. The only problem with this is... I don't see the rivet as a replacement part to put it all back together. Has anyone ever done this repair?

G'day Panhead_Kicker,
Well this is what I would do, I'd take some measurements of the rivets.
the length using callipers or dividers, then the finished width on the inside.
Take your time don't rush yourself. Take more shots for reference purposes.
OK now go from the inside and see those holes in the rivets I would bet that is the center.
Drill'em out ,start small, look very carefully at the last drilling try not to drill into the backing plate.
this can be done , drill down to within a 1/64" of the backing plate. Now support the backing plate
except for the rivet your working on, and now slam it out carefully. With the rivet out measure it up
you'll need to make them, machine them up. Repeat x3.
You can do it!
Pete

Do you have a lathe to make rivets?
It might be easier to cut the top off the bulge, and weld it back on!

If you can spare some time, maybe you could troll ebay for a used plate that is easier to refurbish....

If you just need the bare plate, I have one re-done, for forty five, plus postage. Re-painted, in excellent condition. Just a slight rounding of the corners on the cams. Mike

I don't have a lathe, but a friend does. I think Pete probably described how I'll go about this repair. So if the Rivet link I was given doesn't have the correct size, I'll have them turned. Since the anchor stud was a replacement part, I still find it odd that the rivets were not.
Everyone definitely had a different method to "fix" this, and I appreciate them all. Thanks!

I agreed with Tom, Just take a Dremal tool with an abrasive cut off blade and dice the dome off. It has no structural value to it. Bolt your piece in and weld back. There's no way in hell your going to rivet that thing anywhere close to what the factory did unless you got an 50 ton orbital riveter in you back pocket. Bob L

If you dont want to weld it ---buy pomikes, as mentioned earlier your going to need a good press for factory results. Personaly I would weld mine but Im not looking for originality, just what works better.Good-Luck -----58flh

Thanks guys, but I am going to leave Pomike's good deal to someone who needs the assembly. Mine is a spare that I saved from the scrap heap. I guess I am most curious on how a dealer would have made this repair, since they did carry the stud as a replacement part. Maybe since the stud was designed as a separate part was the only reason it was available, with no real intention or plan by the factory on how to actually use it as a replacement.

Panhead_Kicker!
One thing for certain is that the Motor Company wasn't planning to train and retain dealership technicians that could cope with such tasks.
Instead of investing in tooling, dealerships were soon to be directed to re-model showrooms.
These brakes were produced upon the cusp of the "throw-away" era. Your suspicion that the studs were over-production makes most sense.
At least you've found one!

Besides the fact that somebody cut it off,I cant see why anybody would ever need to replace it.Unless they put 500,000 miles on it.You know when they built these bikes at the factory, they didnt plan on anybody riding them 60 years later.
