hi can anyone help with some brake drum specs
Hi
I have just moved back to New Zealand taking my 45 and my pan with me. I have some paperwork to fill out for the powers who be.
They need to know with regard to the brake drums and linings
1. OE Spec max drum diameter (wear not how far the drum can be turned out) and actual measurement
2. OE Spec minimum brale lining thickness and the actual measurement
3. Max runout /ovality and the actual measurement
I can then put in some "actual measurements" which hopefully will fall nicely within the requirements.
The bikes are wla and 57 panhead
Thanks if anyone can help

Lost!
Sorry I have no specs handy,
But I can warn you not to turn a drum until after you have secured some oversize linings.
Beware also that the center of the lug bolt pattern, as it will mount to a hub, is not always the same as the hole through the middle.

wow. You know, you MIGHT be able to see the need for this if you were importing a used 2001 vehicle for a daily driver, but really, aren't there any loopholes for antiques, historic vehicles etc?

Its all in the name of safety and protecting ourselves from ourselves.
It gets worse when vehicles can be impounded if repairs are not performed.

As I recall the max diameter is stamped inside the drum, Kind of inconvenient, I'm not sure but just over eight inches rings a bell...Mike

Dear Lost Kiwi,
No specs in my original 1952 WL book either. They dont get much more modern. If there were such a thing the front and back would be different would I think.

Well now, make a number up that suits your needs! If these guys can't dig up any real documentation for these numbers, then who's to say you're wrong? I doubt a bureaucrat! <grin>
Yeah that doesn't help, I know.

Re: hi can anyone help with some brake drum specs
lost kiwi,
Checking the manual, the Maximum allowable ID = 8.040 in. or 20.4 cm.
If the drum needs to be turned it can be as long as it is within the finished dimension = 8.100 in. or 20.57 cm. NOTE, use 0.030 in. or 0.76 mm oversize brake linings on brake drums turned to an I.D. of 8.060 in. 20.47 cm minimun to 8.100 in 20.57 cm maximum.

This information came from the Clymer's Manual; Panheads 1948-1965, Chapter 13 page 443.

The specs are also in the AMF Harley Service Manual Electraglide 1959 - 1969 Section 2G 2G-3.

Re: hi can anyone help with some brake drum specs
After reading the original post it sounded like he was also going to make a number up for the "actual measurements". Which tells us that the authorities in NZ are not going to do a technical inspection, tear the bike apart and put the micrometer to it.panhead_kicker wrote:Well now, make a number up that suits your needs! Its a paperwork thing, put some ballpark numbers down that sound believable, sign your name to it, and drive on.

Re: hi can anyone help with some brake drum specs
hi
Thanks very much for all those who helped here. HA i had a Clymer manual but didnt even think to look.
Basically it was all just a bit of bureaucracy gone mad. The tester had given me the brake paperwork to fill in because "I dont get involved in all that crap mate"
It only took 4 hrs from bike in to the inspection centre to riding off with NZ plates all good.
Thanks again for the help , its the 45 next week but now i know exactly what to expect
Cheers
Roger
