63-66 Rear Drum?

#1

Post by panhead_kicker »

I believe this drum to be 63-66, but the cast # is raised on the back , not imprinted as Palmers suggests. It measure's 2 1/8 inches deep. Can anyone make a positive ID on this?
Thanks!

hjans,
Your biggest mistake is to trust a Clymer manual!
Panhead kicker,
There are 4 styles of juice drum. The first (stamped steel like a mechanical drum) only lasted for a very short time and was replaced with the second type, the narrow shoe cast iron type from '58 to '62. the wide type appeared for '63 and there are two versions, The star hub type for '63-'66, and the mid star from '67 to '72. There was a running change in 1960 on the early cast drum and it looks like that is the one you have based on the '59 casting number. It would not be a '63-'66 type.

Thanks for weighing in guys.
Robbie, would you say at this point that it simply depends on whether the wide shoe fits or not? I suppose I'll have to compare the drum depth to the drum on my 69, and if its the same, this drum ought to fit my 64 with stock axle, spacers etc.

panhead kicker,
The backing plate on the later type ('63-'72) fits over the lip on the outside of the drum, the early one (narrow shoe) fits within the lip. Consequently the spacers are different due to the physical location of the backing plate. If you have the stock '64 spacers and axle sleeve and the '63 and later backing plate it all might work out. Check the chain alignment though as I recall there was a difference in the early and late sprockets. I'll try to check my parts books for the differences.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but my bike is a 59 and I am going to need a new drum soon as there are cracks in the lining as well as one of the lugs is stripped. Should I go the route of one of the re-pops which run about $ 250.00? Do I have other options to look at as in different year hub/assembly? I would like to hear some pros/cons as I would like to stay as original as possible but I am not interested in winning any shows.

Thanks!

ozwick86,
I have no experience with an aftermarket drum. When you say your lining is cracked, I take it you mean the drum braking surface, and not the shoe lining?
Also, if you have a lug hole stripped, try to clean the threads up with a tap. If it's bad, I think an oversized lug was made; drill and re-tap for the OS lug.
If this drum is not what I think it is, and yours is "broke" then you and I may need to talk! <grin>

The next time I have the wheel off I will have to see if the cracks in the brake drum can be turned. I don't know how much lining I have left. If the drum can be turned, then I will go the route of the oversize lug. I was hoping to get some more opinions on this; anyone?

Thanks

I'm not sure how thick the later drums are but I had an early drum turned to try and clean it up a bit, by the time we got to a nice surface the drum was too thin to trust with my life so I went with a re-pop. The problem with the re-pop was the sprocket was off center so when I adjusted the chain to 3/4" play at the tightest spot, there was 1 1/2" at the loosest spot. I ran it just tight enough so the chain didn't slap the guard for fear of ruining my main drive gear bushing...Mike

I run a repop I bought from V twin on my 59. The sprocket wasn't perfectly true, but it was usable out of the box. I replaced it because one lug wouldn't tighten. It had a crack in the threaded hole so oversizing the lug wasn't an option. I guess prices have gone up, as I recall it was only about $125.

Well,

Just checked my rear drum lug bolts since my last ride and all lugs are now stripped. Funny how 1 ride can do that as I check them each time before I go out. Prices for the 59 Drum part # 41400-58 are now $ 240.00 and that is for Chinese not American. Anyone have a source for an American Drum?

I went w/ Pauchgo for my 49 because I could not find a decent used one. They advertise them as being made in the USA. Quality appears good. Got it mounted but haven't run it yet.

ozwick86,
If you've now stripped all the lug holes, I'd find the reason and correct it before bolting up a new drum.
I saw a new 58-62 drum on ebay for $160 buy-it-now. Search for the part number.
and... the drum I pictured at the begining of the thread is indeed the deep drum for 63-66! The cast number is Raised , not imprinted as suggested in Palmers. It's a keeper.

Just a few reminders of what you all already know:

Chrome makes a brake drum crack.

Stripped threads can be helicoiled.

Turned drums require oversized unobtainium linings.

Clymer manuals are a sinful waste of trees.
