Rear brake drum bearings

#1

Post by BorJan »

Got my hands on a 67-72 internal hub and have in mind to replace the 36-66 star hub at my rear wheel. My rear brake drum is a 63-66. Are the bearings mounted in the 67-72 rear brake drum ? Can the 63-66 drum be modified to fit 67-72 hub?
Somebody who have a sketch/drawing ?

Regards

The 67-72 drum does have the sealed bearing mounted in the drum. This is the set up I have and I'm going strictly from memory because I do not have a diagram handy. There are three sealed bearings in the hub/drum assembly.
I do not know what the differences are between the 63-66 and the 67-72 drum, but the brake assembly is the same from 63-72. So the brake drum "shell" width is the same....(the backing plate/shoes/wheel cylinder is also the same for 63-72).
I believe all that you will need is a 67-72 rear axle kit with the proper spacers and sleeves....unless there are significant differences in the dimensions of the width of the inner part of the two drums.
I wish I could be more help with exact dimensions so we could determine the differences, but YES the sealed bearings are mounted in the 67-72 drum.

The later brake drum is wider as are the shoes. I have them on my '69 shovel, good drum brakes. The only bitch I have with them is the cost of replacement bearing sets.

HELLO

Bought a tired 1956 and am in the process of putting it back together to ride.
Using some Re_Pop stuff for now, will get orig parts as I run into them and do it all NOS someday.

The frame on the bike is a wishbone rigid H-D

I decieded to run the 67-72 sealed bearing wheels for maint reasons, and also want to use a Hyd Juice rear drum
just so it stops a little better.

Picked up a 63-72 complete rear backing plate with brakes on e-bay.
Problem is there is no boss on the frame for the backing plate anchor stud to tie to.

How can I pull this off, short of a trip to the machine shop to modify the backing plate.

Pics part numbers, etc would be a lot of help.

thanks Guys

PS, yes I need a good 56 straightleg frame if some one runs across reasonable.

Lots of guys welded a tab on the frame to hold the backing plate. I personally did one once with a short 1/4 by 1 1/4 strap bent to fit from the backing plate post to one of the sidecar mount holes in the frame. Easy fit and no frame mods. No pictures as this was in the '70s and i could have cared less about documentation then!
