The bike came with no rear brake internals . These were in a box of stuff and seem to fit together. Does it look righ

t? I think the back plate is 63-72. Is that correct?

Jerryd--As long as the wheel cylinder held fluid on the bench,All looks good!--Now the fun part comes of arcing the shoelinings./Nice job!--I have a question on the shoes?-Did the rear juicers all have that slot directly under the spring under the cylinder??--Im asking as That slot thats on both shoes is for a Stop/plate!,Im not sure if the cylinders arms that push the shoe out Will take the consistent pull back on that spring?--The extenders do travel in all directions when extended or at the stop of spring!.The shoes do LOOK NEW ! So im guessing this is just a mainstay in the machining as it wont interfere with anything.I know from previous brake-jobs that a bar was in there to let the cylinder olny compress so much when off the brake.As long as its not in the view in the manual then your fine & Im thinking of another juice-brake that I repaired.---Respectfully---RICHIE

Richie,
Those shoes had other applications, they were also used on cars. That slot was for part of the emergency brake operating system, I know that old Studebakers used them. I'll see if I can find a picture in a parts book.

Yes the other slots are used in other auto applications for the automatic brake adjuster actuated when you reverse and apply the brake. I never saw the original but given the depth of the drum they appear to be the right size. Otherwise what do the proper ones look like. Am I correct in the date of the backing plate? So much of this bike has been added to over the years. I will just keep it going as is till funds and parts show up. No one around has a arcing drum. I used to do them 45 years ago when in auto shop but the practice seems to be gone . They eyeball nicely but I will put some sandpaper in the drum and true them up after I run the drum in the lathe. Just overhauled the cylinder Carquest kit c575 in Canada. jerryd

here are pictures of inside before and after of a 60 rear brake. But your wheel cylinder should have a threaded hole pointing straight out for a banjo bolt to attach the rear brake hose. I've not seen one pointing the way yours is.

The banjo on mine is round an sits nicely on the angled wheel cylinder. Don't have a picture but it was hooked up with the one I have fine. did a little look at wheel cylinders for this bike and they have angles. I have an original plate ,it was straight but broken fitting. It sits inside the drum I have. I think I have a later year plate, 63-72 maybe? thanks for the reply's jerryd

Thank-you guys--now I remember /a wheel with ridges that you clicked to bring the shoes closer to the drums.--I knew I remembered something was weird about that slot--I think all 60s & back cars had that on the reare drums!--Richie

Gerry, I don't mean to piss in your corn flakes but that sprocket is toast. At leased that's the way it looks in your pictures.

Panpal, HD went to the angled banjo fitting when the big rear chain guard came out in 63...Mike

Yes the angled banjo sits properly on the angled cylinder which makes it a 63-72 , correct? I have the large chain guard. And yes the sprocket is done as is the chain. I am new to Harley so I am just sorting parts out as this bike has multiple year parts. Its on the wish list. I put the brake together and mounted the wheel. There is a gap (1/4-5/16) between the brake plate and the drum. I know it is not right . Is the axle sleeve the wrong year? What is the length of 58-62 and 63-? That will mean the right side of drum spacer will be incorrect too. Thanks for the coaching. jerry

There are three different axle sleeves for hyd. rear brakes, 41400-58 41400-63 and 41400-67. The 58 spacer is good up to 67...Mike
