Panhead Master Cylinder FE-24119

#1

Post by 59Panman »

Is it advisable to purchase an original used Wagner FE-24119 Master Cylinder on Ebay and rebuild it? Is this the way to go? Or just buy a aftermarket unit?

Not sure what to do here. I have a ZEL unit on my bike, it is leaking and it needs a rebuild. Is any rebuild kit OK or are there preferred parts?

Well,

I picked up a original FE-24119 from a local vintage shop near me in Santa Cruz Vintage Cycles. The unit is in really good condition with no pitting in the cylinder bore. I have ordered a rebuild kit and should be good to go. I use DOT 5 fluid.

i have tried those rebuild kits on both ends and they just leaked. i didn't have the cylinders bored, just put in the parts. finally treated myself to new master and slave and have brakes. the money you save with a rebuild kit is lost when you have to replace the shoes a couple of times. j
(i have a chrome original lockheed master, $20?)

$9 for a rebuild kit is worth it for me to try it. The original master I bought appears to be much nicer than my ZEL that was on the bike.

The slave on my 64 was a total rust wad when I first got the bike, I had it bored and sleeved with a stainless sleeve. They actually did it while I waited!...Mike

well you did it right. i can feel the wear with my finger in the master, you gotta have them bored or go new. when i took off my rear wheel, which is always a pleasure, i was greeted by what looked like a half cup of black grease covering everything. just brake fluid mixed with asbestos dust and who knows what else. j

That's great Mike. I can't seem to get anyone to do it around here in NW Ohio. I hate to not be able to use original parts. Could i send a couple to them? Thanks. Mike S.
