Re: ever see one of these ?
If I'm not mistaken, that is an early prototype of the nod alert. A cord attached by a noose around the riders neck controlled a switch that linked that spark plug to the ignition coil. When the rider started to nod off, leaning forward, the switch was closed, energizing the spark plug.
Although it cannot be seen in the picture, there was a wet rag attached to the electrode of the plug, which passed through the seat, making contact with the riders butt. I'm told it was quite effective, but the NTSB nixed it because of the number of accidents caused by riders strangling themselves with the noose.
Regards,
John

Re: ever see one of these ?
John, that's not exactly right, but close. Those were made for the guys that could not afford the DH-49 "Butt Lights" under their seats, the spark arc from the plug produced a cheap alternative to running lights, and also provided a handy way to carry a spare plug. Chicago Motorcycle Supply sold those.Panshovevo wrote:If I'm not mistaken, that is an early prototype of the nod alert.

Rick, where did you find that?

Mike, are you sure about that? Just look at all the rust on that seat pan, caused by the wet rag.FlatHeadSix wrote:John, that's not exactly right, but close. Don't mind me, I've been breathing argon for about three weeks now, and am still not finished with my frame.

Awww c'mon guys. What are you thinking????
That is the anti theft system. They stopped using them 'cause the wet rag kept ruining the seat pans.

After giving it further thought, I've realized that it wasn't just the wet rag that was at fault. Americans never used to eat as much meat as we do now. Beans were a cheap and ready source of protein.Think about it...51Hog wrote:Awww c'mon guys. What are you thinking????

Edited to add that the last tank of Argon must have had some nitrous oxide in it. That would also explain my lousy welding.

Dear Fellas,
It must have something to do with the buddy spring yoke turned backwards?

Re: ever see one of these ?
Maybe all you guys are wrong. Maybe the spark plug is used to burn off excess methane gas as as needed.

Re: ever see one of these ?
The skid plate probably fell off cause he never bothered to check the front motor mount bolts. Though it's better than most as it's still got both ears on the mill....bosheff

Re: ever see one of these ?
Dear Underdoggie,
I think thats the same as Panshovevo's bean theory. Now we know why there are holes in the seat pan.
Without wiring attached, it is hard to tell, but it might just have been a radio interference emitter to confuse early radar guns. Like shreds of tin foil in your hubcaps.
Everybody needs one either way,
PS!
A hole drilled right there on the seat tee sure seems familiar. Anybody got an extra hole there for no reason?

Dear Bob,
Since radar guns are a whole lot better now we may never know.
But the legend was you would get in lots of trouble if you tried it because you would read three hundert miles an hour,

One of the ugliest paint jobs I ever seen.
And I just noticed that the belly numbers started with a 2 AS IN 249-.Doesnt that mean its a 61 inch and the bike should be an EL not an FL?
