Touring on a 1964 Duo-Glide

After my initial ride, I'm feeling pretty positive about the condition of my "new" '64. I'm interested to hear how these bikes handle on longer trips that are mostly on the highway. What is considered a reasonable cruising speed for this bike (assuming good mechanicals and stock sprockets)? Is there a need to stop and let the bike cool down periodically or can it run out a full tank of gas before needing a break? I plan to ride my on a lot more "short" trips to work out any gremlins, but would like to use it for longer trips if possible. Not an Iron Butt run, but maybe a couple hundred miles or so.

If everything is in order,
It should be able to do 70 mph all day long.

My 65's did it with a sidehack!
(Interstates can be a wonderful thing, smoothing out the hills and all....)

Maintenance is everything, of course.

That's good to hear, 70 mph will be just fine. I can already understand what you mean on needing breaks for yourself, even though it seems more comfortable than my Sporty so far...

panhead-jim, short trips are good to sort out any 'adjustments' that may be needed but
then just pack up & go. My '62 can go all day but my body quits around 500 miles. Less
than 100 miles between gas stops works well. Enjoy it.

If you’ve heard this before ignore it if not read on.

Our friend Sir Rat was out on the Kamehameha approaching Wiamea Bay from the Turtle Bay direction since he was riding the island counter clock wise (last week it was clockwise) and he pulled up by the little church overlooking the bay to watch the surfers for a break.

He shut down the Pan and was looking out over the pleasant scene when a voice came to him. It was God and he said. “Sir Rat you have been a most righteous biker and are most pleasing to me so I would like to grant you one wish”. Rat scratched his head, though a bit, then it came to him in a flash. “God I would like you to build a bridge to the Mainland so I could ride to LA or maybe even Idaho instead of just putting in circles around this rock”.

God replied “I could certainly do that, but Rat, don’t you think it is a bit selfish”. “You’re right God” replied Rat “I guess it was. Hey you know what, me and the ol lady sometimes don’t exactly see eye to eye, like she cries when she should be glad and sometimes I do what I think is nice for her and she thinks I’m up to something. So God , to help me be a better man for her, I would like for you to give me an understanding of women .” There was complete silence for a while then God replied “Two lanes or Four lanes”

Took my first "long" trip this weekend down to Maxton, NC for a land speed record event. I was able to skip the Interstate and take back roads down there, so cruised at about 60-65MPH. Mileage roundtrip was about 225 and the bike ran great all the way there and back. Looking forward to more trips on this bike.

DD, when you bottom out the shocks with a load like that they probably don't do much for ya! , might as well have a hard tail.

looks like you had a good trip in spite of the weather this year.

Nothing wrong with traveling on a hardtail. And a Panhead is downright modern!
