Starting motor that has been sitting for years
I am getting ready to start a motor that has been sitting for at least 10 years.
The motor has good compression and turns over easily when the plugs are removed. I have flushed out the gas and oil, lines and tanks.
Am rebuilding the carb, added new points/plugs.
Any ideas on anything I have missed?

Tranny fluid , if you haven't already flushed & changed it. I would check the clutch pak ,just to make sure its not all stuck together and all rusty. primary chain lubed by hand. Makes ya kinda wounder how the cyl. walls look like & rings . I have seen some bad stuff happen when all that in there is rusty because of lack of proper storage prep. Maybe spray some light oil in there, might help or make it worse ,its your call . You have been rotating already though .

I have done a tune up on the bike including lubrication of the grease points and chain.
I have flushed and refilled the tranny already but I did not think about the examining clutch pack, outside of adjusting it.
Good idea.
Spayed some oil in the cylinders before I initially kicked it over. I assume the rings and vales are decent as the motor has compression
but will do a compression test on each cylinder but plan to before I start
Thanks FG for your comments. I have a week before I will be ready to give it a try

Dear Craig,
You might take the old exhaust off and put a heat gun through it for a good while, outside naturally.
Old gook can put out more smoke than the motor, and really scare you for no reason.

Oh if it was that good
Took pipes (dual) off. Attached with sheet metal screws at some points
When I lifted them up a pile of black soot appeared on the floor.
Needless to say, a new exhaust system is called for

Re: Starting motor that has been sitting for years
Doug, Thanks for the post. Have made the ride to Dale's in Maggie Valley many times until he closed last year.
I am actualy doing a bit more before I try and start the pan, not as brave as Dale is.
From what I can tell from the video, he did not add any gas to start just the WD-40 propellant.
Am I seeing that right?

It looked that way to me also. Ive heard that a guy ran a V.W. bus off aerosol before. But he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. I think he used Paint the WD 40 makes a lot more sense to me
