Early Panhead problems

#1

Post by Newbie »

Hello all, Looking for an early pan for my next project, a '48 FL to be exact. I only have some knowledge of these motors. The motor is fully rebuilt to stock specs. There are a few things that I am unsure about. They are the exhaust ports, intake (plumber type), Linkert Carb, and the oiler. The motor is in great shape and all of these components look fine. I just want to know how much maintenance, etc. is involved with owning such an old engine? I also want to plug the oiler so that I can run an open primary, is that possible? Please any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking of doing an accurate panhead if I don't get the '48. Thanks again.

Things may "look fine" but often problems just aren't visible.

The plumber's manifold is a superior design, if properly sealed. It is easily tested with 15psi and soapsuds, so you can 'see' leaks.

Linkerts rule.
But they need special attention, as we all will when we are that age.

You cannot plug the breather without venting it elsewhere.

These subjects have been discussed at length on this forum, so enjoy the "search " function!
