Can you do your own chrome

Post by 03Roadking »

Has anyone out there tried this I was at the understanding you needed some serious equipment to do this and you had to use cyanide for some of the process
The guy that does my chrome gave me the run down about how it works
first it's striped then copper plate if the pits still show you copper it again until it's smooth then nickel plate then chrome plate If you guys see a white mushroom cloud off to the west you will know I tried it

03RoadKing,

This site sells do-it-yerself kits. I've never tried their stuff, but I came across this site a while back and the whole idea seems pretty cool. I would have to practice on worthless metal for a while before I felt confident doing any of my bike parts, but chrome-at-home apparently is and can be done......
And Billy is right.......prep & polish, polish, polish!
Caswell sells polishing supplies also, but you can probly get that stuff locally.

The site below is excellent for general info on metal finishing. Check their FAQ and forum archives. They highly do not recommend doing it on a hobby basis, and mock anybody who says it's easy. They refer to it as "quackery".

I'd probly leave it to the pros, but knowledge into the subject is always a good thing.

Joan plated Maxwell's Silver Hammer, you see..... :Smile
