Still waitin to see 49 Pan run...
As noted in a privious post I am waiting to go see a 49 Panhead run that I looked at on Labor Day weekend.. A new battery was on order ...thus not running.
The new 6 volt battery finally arrived just before last weekend. . I went over last Sunday to see it run. The owner had some issues charging the new battery and it barely had a small charge in it. He was able to start the bike with the battery still connected to the charger. (I didn't think this was a very good idea.) It ran well and didn't miss or pop or do anything funny. He shut it down after a couple of minutes or so. I ran very strong with no smoke or missing and only a couple of drops of oil under it after sutdown. It hadn't been started since last summer as far as I know.
The owner contacted JP cycle and they are sending him another new battery as he cannot get it to fully charge. Is should be here this coming week and hopefully it will be running by this coming weekend. I am hoping to make an offer but want to see it run up and down the road and shift properly.
Details of the bike are below:
Asking price is $7,000 but might take a little less.
Very nice professional paint job in black. Nice harley tank badges.
Fat Bob rear fender with chrome tall sissy bar.
Narrow front wheel/tire with narrow fender.
Engine rebuilt a couple of years ago and repainted.
Transmission rebuilt with new gears as well.
S&S oil pump.
New brake shoes and liners as well as new wheel bearings etc...
New custom leather seat in original configuration on spring post mount.
Straight pipes.
Mostly all vintage harley panhead parts such as telescoping forks, wheels, oil tank, gas tanks, Harley wishbone frame uncut in very nice condition.
Aftermarket parts would include handlebar switchs, engine cover on left side, air cleaner and the horn. Everything is super clean.
Owner has all receipts and some leftover part that he will throw in.
By looking at it it's a 9.5 out of 10. Very sharp and looks nicely done.Is it worth it? Any help would be appreciated.
Thought if I picked it up I could have some fun and either sell it in a couple years and make a few bucks, or keep it longer and repalce the nonstandard items with original Harley parts.

sounds good even if you don't get a chance to drive it.
but, for the price you are talking a tranny rebuild would not be unreasonable if needed.

Better use a Battery Tender on that motorcycle battery or it will be ruined the first time it's hoked up to any other charger. For Sure.
Read the "review" on the amazon Battery Tender page. Straight from their instruction sheet.

VT,
What do you mean by "hooked up to any other charger." ?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

What I meant was , Harley numbers,49FLxxxx, not "special construction".On modern batteries, a battery tender type charger keeps from "over charging" and ruining a new batt.Mike

Re: Still waitin to see 49 Pan run...
Motorcycle batteries are small with small capacity and should be charged at a lower rate than a full size car or truck battery. Automotive battery chargers usually push anywhere from 6 to 15 amps which will overheat the H2 Harley battery and usually warp the plates which causes internal shorting and trashes the battery.
Low amp chargers; sometimes called "trickle" or "float" chargers or battery tenders, charge at about 1 amp, perfect for the bike battery. When you put a new battery into service you should fill it with fresh battery fluid (dilute sulphuric acid) and charge it at no more that 1 amp for at least 24 hours BEFORE you attempt to put any load on it. If it was a good battery to begin with it should give you good service as long as you continue to charge it correctly.
like we said in your first post; "what are you waiting for?"

I don't see how you could go wrong if the 49 is in the comdition you say it's in. I would buy it for 7 grand even if it needed a complete tranny rebuild.
