Finishes
Hi, I am beating my brain out trying to figure out what finishes the bolts and washers are supposed to be on my 1957. I have looked in the Palmer book and can't find it. I found a nice chart with the sizes and all, but nothing on finishes. Does anybody know if they are supposed to be parkerized or cadmium? Thanks

Re: Finishes
Page 614 of my Palmers has the list under the heading 1957 Painting & plating details. Very few parts parkerized.

Re: Finishes
Most nuts, bolts, washers are parkerixed, a few are cad plated, Palmers has the details.

Re: Finishes
Since we are on the topic , I'll put in a plug for the reproduction fasteners made by Colony Tool in Brunswick, Ohio. Most of the aftermarket suppliers sell them. Good people and good stuff.

Re: Finishes
Geo,
I agree totally. Colony makes great stuff in user friendly kits. I have used them for years.
The thing i like about Clete and Bart (the dude and his son) is the mom and pop atmosphere when you visit them at a meet or by email. Go prepared with a list of the things you need, and it goes like this: "I'll take 3 of these 4 of those" and so on...
They are usually my second stop at Davenport after i mooch a beer off Cotten.

Re: Finishes
Thanks everybody. All I have found in Palmer is that specialty bolts were HD made and all others were marked 1038 cp. This really doesn't tell me which were parkerized or cad, or fort that matter, which were not special HD bolts. is there a page or appendix I am missing somewhere I really hope????
Thanks for the old dude lead, will call him. I like mom and pops. I like Colony, they make great stuff but I did not see where they had the 1038 cp marking. Thank you everybody for your input.

Re: Finishes
Laura!
The "CP" next to the bolt's different numbers reportedly stood for Chandler Products, and it wouldn't surprise me if they make modern Colony hardware.
But a quick side-by-side comparison of the characters quickly distinquishes modern from the vintage hardware.
....Cotten

Re: Finishes
Cotten is right on about the CP being a Chandler Products hallmark. Even though so much of the manufacturing that was done in Ohio has been "outsourced" to foreign countries (along with what were decent paying jobs ), Chandler Products is still in business here in Ohio and still making bolts and other fasteners. Cotten is also correct about the Colony/Chandler connection, Colony offers many of the original sizes of the CP bolts; and yes, the "CP" designation is a protected hallmark. Another associated bit of info - the fasteners are still being "parkerized" by the same company that originally did the parkering for the MoCo, Parker Rustproofing, yet another company with deep Ohio roots.
