Are Pan Engines Inherently Noisy?
Ya'll don't rag on me too much. Although I have had my 1964 since 1974 I have ran a shovel top end until recently when I got a Pan top end to put back on it. So, I have no bench mark to go by as to engine noise. I can't go down to the Harley dealer and ask for them to fire up one of those Panheads they have sitting around so I can hear how it sounds. I am running stock FL cam. New set of Jims tappet bodies and lifters. Steel rocker arm covers with no felt pads. Rocker arm assemblies are within specs. Good oil pressure, 35lbs. on start up. I have used the old screw driver in the ear trick at various parts of the engine. Nothing sounds abnormal. Just rhythmatic mechanical noise. I thought mine was noisy until I found this Pan on You Tube. Mine is not any thing near that bad. Thanks for any input. " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

MY pan is QUIET for a SOLID lifter bike!---IF you have HYD.lifters Check oil-flow to lifters!-If solids like I assume you have Recheck valve ADJ!---IS cam in good cond.?---IF you have the big-axle kit in your rollers, I have heard they tend to run bad(loud)-& lower oil press.!--IF all is good then a good valve adj. is in order!--Also make sure your not slapin the tins!-incase you have a hi-lift cam!--JUST some food for thought.-----RICHIE

Re: Are Pan Engines Inherently Noisy?
Your Pan should not be any noisier than the Shovel version was. If it is, there could be a variety of reasons. From resonance in the pan covers, end play and sloppiness in the rockers, lifters, etc.

Mine sounds like a well oiled Singer sewing machine when up to temp.... Solids, aluminum pushrods, Andrews J... To me, it's a beautiful sound.

Mine is not too noisy, but I love that whine of the cam gears and generator! That gets it for me!
