Belt primaries harder to kick?

#1

Post by ArizonaMike »

Hello,

Has anyone noticed if it's drastically harder to kickstart after changing to a belt in a tin primary? I injured my knee
after trying to start my bike the first time after changing to a belt primary. While my knee's healing and I exercise the
inner thigh muscle to build it up, I'd be interested to know if others have noticed a difference in resistance.
Thanks in advance for replies.

Sounds like the belt is too tight.
If that is the case, I'd correct ASAP, as the belt tightens
MORE when fully heated up.
& will (in time) damage bearings in trans & motor.
Too much 'side-load'...

Bummer about your knee.

Mike, Sorry about your knee. Mine wasnt any harder to kick with a belt and it shouldnt be - is the primary ratio still the same as you had before?

I dont think I would blame it on the belt no difference on mine.Check belt tension, and alignment, and make sure its not rubbing anywhere gear ratio is same on the belt as it wasw on chain I take it? Hope knee gets better

Make sure that tranny is sitting correctly in the plate, I had to hog out sliders when I put mine on it wouldn't kick at all too tite. I think it kicks easier but probally something I was smoking way back then. ::)
rest that knee long summer ahead. I found an aftermarket electric start setup for old Pans pretty good looking setup bout 2Gs but pretty slick looking. Haven't talked with anyone that ran it yet. Good Luck with the knee

There's a guy named DetroitBlue over on the other forum who installed the electric start kit on a 58.
