Panhead vs early shovel clutch hubs

#1

Post by flatheadDave »

Other than the starter ring, is there any difference in say a 63 panhead clutch hub and a 69 shovel head clutch hub?

There is a difference to watch out for:
The pre-65 hub may be slightly longer toward the mainshaft than the electric start hubs that may be shorter toward the support bearing in the inner primary. Just something to watch out for....35612-36, pre-'65, vs 35614-65, 1965 & newer..... 1958-68 parts book # 99456-68 page 44.
The -41B seems to be a fitsall replacement....

Dave, are you asking about the hub, or about the clutch shell (basket)?

There are no functional differences other than the ring gear.
Three issues:
1) No ring gear.
2) 1965-69 R-G sets further outboard and impinges on the rivets.
Version 3), 1970 & newer, the R-G fits closer, toward the tranny, does not foul the rivets for the internal lugs....
All three will work in a kick me to start only application......

I use late ones all the time for early bikes, just knock the ring gear off.
