Internal Throttle Wire Gauge
I have a Bendix carb I'd like to try out and I have an internal throttle (factory bars, grip, etc.). I got a solid wire cable (aftermarket) and it's kinked. I saw an old post in the KB saying instrument wire was used and it wasn't so prone to kinking. I could measure the kinked cable diameter with vernier calipers, but I was wondering if there was a simple gauge number. I'd like to find the appropriate "note" piano wire. I would assume that would be superior to the junk that I have.

Mongrel,
I have Bendix carbs on a couple of Shovels and I just go to a local bicycle shop and get braided brake cable, cut to length and thread it through the outer coil to the carb.

Re: Internal Throttle Wire Gauge
The return spring on my Bendix isn't as stiff as the spring on the Super E I currently have now. I'm concerned about it not being able to close the throttle sufficiently against the friction and mechanics of the spiral grip. With the piano wire I can at least push it closed.

Pan50head,
What size wire was that?
BMI Karts has this size .063.

The wire is 0.055", from what I'm told.59Panman wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 4:33 amPan50head,

Re: Internal Throttle Wire Gauge
Fellas,
A tip….
I took a dremel tool with a small grinder attachment and rounded the end of the wire and it made it easier to install the wire thru the outer sheath.
Mine got hung up about 1/2 way thru where the bends in the handlebars were…… grease it well too.

Re: Internal Throttle Wire Gauge
Well, I got my 0.055" piano wire from Grainger delivered yesterday. It seems to be a nice fit in the cable housing. Only problem is the length I ordered was split up into 36" lengths - not long enough. I guess I didn't read the description closely enough. I need at least 48 - 50". This stuff is far superior to the aftermarket throttle cable wire I had. It's made of spring steel and doesn't kink.

Re: Internal Throttle Wire Gauge
Instead of grease, buy a can of dry graphite lubricant and spray it inside the outer cable, using a red "straw" attachment on the nozzle. Grease works fine for a while, but it attracts dirt and will eventually start gumming up the works.George Greer wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 5:02 pm Fellas,

Re: Internal Throttle Wire Gauge
Getting hung up in the bars is another issue I wonder about. I currently have OEM buck horn style 2-piece bars and the cable has to make a rather severe bend. I think glide bars would be more forgiving. With all the different contributing factors like cable friction, spiral mechanism, angle at carb attachment, etc., I'm not sure how much each is contributing to the overall difficult operation of the throttle.George Greer wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 5:02 pm Fellas,

Re: Internal Throttle Wire Gauge
I have a spray can of graphite dry lube. I'll give that a try when I put it all together. How about at the spiral, plunger, rollers, etc. at the grip?chop1543 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 1:14 pmInstead of grease, buy a can of dry graphite lubricant and spray it inside the outer cable, using a red "straw" attachment on the nozzle.
