Hi,
I just became the proud owner of a 64 Duo basket case. Can anyone tell me the best choice to use for heads for a 64 pan.
thanks
Mike

The original outside oilers are by far the best you can use, and the only ones that are correct for that bike. They are rare and expensive so best of luck to you!

Re: Best repop heads??
We recently got a V-Twin "panhead" engine here at work.I was impressed by the quality of the head castings.I dont know where they are made but they look pretty good. The only odd thing is they use a 3\4" reach plug which is I suppose because they run the plug in the head like a shovel rather than in a cast in insert like a pan.The retail price on them is pretty high IMO,comparable to what I would expect to pay for a decent set of outside oiler originals.

hi,if you fine some 64 heads, make sure that they don't have press in valve seats. if they do,would not pay to mutch for them,if they have bronze seats, you pay dearley for them.just my opinion......WITH RESPECT...JR

Re: Best repop heads??
I have a set of '55 heads with press in seats. I've put >75K miles on these heads in the last 6 years and all I've done is replace the exhaust spigots once. This includes 6 summers of Phoenix heat riding everyday. Press in seats are just fine if the job is done right. Don't just let any shop do the work. You need to use a valve seat that will expand at the same rate (or as close to it as possible) as the head.JR JOHNSON wrote:hi,if you fine some 64 heads, make sure that they don't have press in valve seats. if they do,would not pay to mutch for them,if they have bronze seats, you pay dearley for them.just my opinion......WITH RESPECT...JR

Re: Best repop heads??
I've done some hints at identifying a head where the seller may not know what he has, or describe it badly, etc.

Re: Best repop heads??
hi,Craig, you say is so true,so when you buy some heads, lets say on ebay, who put the seats in?,not worth trusting in somebody's work.if you were to buy original heads, and pay the price, they should be bronze seats. i have droped seats in my pans, and baisley put them in,didn't blame them just part of the game. but didn't have choice on it,back in the 70s....with respect....JR

Re: Best repop heads??
Hey all,
Thanks for the replies. Does anyone have any opinions on the v=twin replica heads with outside oiler?
I am searching pretty hard for a set of heads for this motor and am looking at all options.
Also, who is the taiwan bandit?
Mike

Re: Best repop heads??
To answer your question about TED it is V-Twin which is Ted Cycle in N.Y. & a great amount of their products are made in Taiwan China and are of poor quality & fit. Also many other after market catalog sellers like J&P Cycles get their parts from the same manufacturers and are also poor quality & fit. Most after market parts require some tweaking to get them to fit & many are just plain junk. It is best to try & find original parts even if you have to do some refurbishing they may cost more but they will fit & if the rework is done well they will last for many years. I had to do extensive repair work to the heads on My 1952 Pan when I got it about 30 years ago but they are almost 60 years old now & work just fine. I doubt many after market heads will ever survive for 60 years. Keep looking for an original set of heads & forget the Repop junk. Just my opinion & I'm sure we'll hear from some others that will have stories of how good their Repop parts are, but my experience with Repop stuff is most is poor quality & poor fit.

Re: Best repop heads??
I see your point JR. When you buy heads that already have hardend seats in them you have no way of knowing if they were done correctly. So you're right... it's a gamble. I think the metalurgy has improved alot since the 70's. Today there are some hard alloys that can be used to make seats that have almost the same expansion rate as the aluminum used in the old castings. That's the key to not dropping seats.
