#1

Post by mik666 »

hi all
hey has anyone removed there old hardened valve cover gaskets by cutting them and then stretched the silicon ones over the covers successfully ? my cover are leaking a bit and i don't really want to pull the heads completely off until it become more necessary but thought this might work
thx as always!

Yes, Craig (used to post her a lot, rode a chopper to work pretty much daily) had mentioned to me that was one of the benefits of the silicon gaskets. So, yes I'd say its doable, not sure how you would get all the old gasket off the surface though.

Hey Fellas....
I have never heard of such an animal as silicon valve cover gaskets, but then I've pretty much been out of the Panhead business from 1973 until three years ago. So can you tell me who has and sells 'em? Also I hope you mean the rubbery Silicone material, and not silicon, which is basically sand. Let me know the vendor. I am using the metal reinforced thin gaskets from Cometic on my current build......RooDog

Accurate Engineering sold them in the past, but I haven't seen them on their website for some time. Real Gaskets in Tennessee is currently selling them, or had in the past year. I've got a set from Real Gaskets that I never used, not sure if I will ever.

yes i have and yes it worked ,,

i bought one sq meter of 1,5mm hight temp silicon rubber sheet

i used a original gasket as a template then cut it out ,

lifted the rocker cover scraped out the old gasket cleaned as best as i could ,

smeared some silicone on the new gasket streched it over job done ,,

this is on a 1950 hydra with out Drings ,, done around 2000mls now and clean and dry ,,,,,,,plus i have plenty of silicone sheet left

thx guys
i installed them pretty much as John did - raised covers and removed old gaskets by cutting in half and sliding the silicon jobs over the covers then under. The PO had put some silicon on the old gaskets so they lifted out easily - haven't tried running the motor as waiting for my new to me right hand tank to come back from paint shop etc.
thx!
