Welded exhaust ports on heads

#1

Post by Mose »

I've almost got the heads ready to bead blast. Would it hurt if I used my dremmel to clean up the welds around the exhaust ports before I take them to my welder to get the cracks in the heads fixed?

Mose!

To assure a good fit for the clamps and pipe,
as well as to give some meaningfull resemblance of "authentic",
a cutter that pilots off of the new spigot is used to give a machined shoulder instead of a hand-sculpted and scarred appearance.

I would post a pic of my tool, if only my best welder hadn't trashed it with his impact driver, and wouldn't give it back.

PS: Liberty is currently in severe need of skilled aluminum welding assistance.

Too bad we are on opposite sides of the country, Cotten, I know a really good aluminum (and pretty much anything else) welder.

When I first showed up at the guy shop (who is reputed to be one of the two best frame welders in this area) he had a set of panhead engine cases in a custom vice mounted jig fixing a break where it bolts on to the frame. The entire section was broken of and the end result looked pretty good to me.

Is there a way to remove valve guides at home without screwing them or the heads up?

You remove them with a press, or spme people do it with a hammer. Since you are removing them I assume you are replacing them, if that is the case you can drill them and tap them for a bolt then pound them out with a drift. I personally wouldnt pound on them if you were planning on reusing them.

Warningwarningwarningwarning.

Multitudes of Pans (as well as later aluminum) head castings have been disastrously damaged by callous guide removal.

Not only must ALL deposits upon the guide within the port be meticulously removed, the head must also be well soaked with decent oven heat .
(300* was my successful preference).

Tapping them out with a mallet and drift also gives feel for re-installation.

Unless you have a screw press, all feel is lost.
Ordinary hydraulic presses make scrap.

In case you are not aware
The head in the third picture has one insert that looks like it is pulling out by the exhaust port.

The two closest to the exhaust port are above the plane, fixable?
I'm wondering why it didn't blow the head gasket?

Mose!

Stretched inserts are a common condition. The entire headgasket surface should be ground flat, including the cast-in inserts. You will find the "low spots" to be next to each port.

And the scratches in the exhaust valve means yes I'm getting new valves and guides.
