Lubing speedo cable
What's the best way to lube a panhead speedo cable ? I've heard oil, graphite, etc.
The 'book' calls for graphite grease. What do you guys use ?
Thanks, Rick

Re: Lubing speedo cable
After going to the hardware store and the auto parts store I can report they don't sell graphite grease. They have powder graphite, liquid graphite in a spray can, lithium grease, and a few synthetic lubricants. I think I'll need a time machine to get graphite grease.
How about ATF ? Coil the cable in a coffee can and pour in ATF and let it sit awhile ?
Thanks, Rick

Re: Lubing speedo cable
I had a fella in North Carolina build me a cable that was correct for my '48. He recommended a synthetic lithium based grease.

Re: Lubing speedo cable
There is a lube on the market called "TriFlo". I used to purchase it at the local key shop. It is liquid teflon I'm told. Works great for speed-o cables, throttle cables as well as brake and clutch cables. If adjusted properly these cables should last damn near forever if ya use this stuff. Gun shops may also carry this stuff....bosheff

Re: Lubing speedo cable
Gunslick graphite may work for you and good stuff on revolvers.

Otherwise I've used INOX. It works well too.

I don't think it matters a great deal what you use; the important thing is to keep it lubed. Some products will last a good long time, while others are a waste of effort. I believe that aerosol products lack longevity-- to me, there's nothing better than pulling the inner core out and getting your hands dirty.

Re: Lubing speedo cable
I definitely agree with that theory. You're never going to know for sure unless you pull it apart. I think it's worth it to make sure you get maximum life out of your cable. Not to mention risking speedo damage.Bigincher wrote:I don't think it matters a great deal what you use; the important thing is to keep it lubed. Re: Lubing speedo cable
If I can remember when I do it next,
I shall bake molybdenum disulphide onto the coil before packing the sheath with Lubriko, using a veterinary syringe.
I'll bet I get a couple more mph top end!
