Help with speedo teardown please...

Hey all.
I've got a sticky speedo on my '51 FL. Otherwise it's in great shape, with a good face, and needle.

I need to know how to get the needle off of the pin so that I can get the face off and properly clean and lubricate the innards.

Any help appreciated..

Hi John,
I believe the needle is just a push fit on the pin,(later ones definitely are),
BUT PLEASE CONFIRM THAT FIRST.

Still have not really gotten anywhere with this thing... It looks as though there is a portion of the needle that's actually bent around a fitting on the end of the "pin".. If I pry the tabs away, I'm certain that I'll not get the humpty-dumpty back together as tight as before. I'm also sure that once I pry the tabs away I'll find the way to take it apart correctly... I'd sure hate to send the unit to a speedo shop but that may be the last resort.. Any suggestions of where to send it, or who to contact.

I think you'll find that the needle and fitting stay in one piece.
Later models had a plastic needle fused to that brass fitting and just pushed onto the pin.
I don't see how else it would be done.

I just had a speedo core rebuilt for my 65 pan... The face on the core was damaged and the pin was gone, as well as the glass broken. I wanted a face with some patina to match my bike (didn't want a new speedo on an original paint bike). I spoke with him on the phone, told him what I needed, and got it. He did a great job... Great work & a very good price. Sent it to him from Ohio and turn around time was 7 days

Thanks for the complete story on the speedo. Nice finish. The people that are good at it are like watchmakers. The only pix I've seen on repair are in the Palmer book.....and he has it chucked in a lathe to cut the bezel off. Leave it to the experts.
