Speedometer Drive Unit Problem

#1

Post by Ripley/Fla »

When I worked on my transmission I found a welded area by one of the rachet lid bolts almost directly above the boss for the speedometer drive unit. I thought someone had broken the case removing the rachet lid. The previous owner had ground down the little gear for the speedometer drive unit. It had 11 teeth. Anyway, I picked up another 11 tooth drive unit and tried to install it. HA Ha Ha. There is no way it is going to fit unless you pound it in and probably break the case. The 'new' drive unit is out of a 2nd trans I picked up. From looking at the trans in the bike (it is hard to be exact as it is a little hole) and the spare trans, the pressed on trans gear appears to be the same 'teeth.' The spare trans is older as it has the vent bolt in the case and not in the rachet lid bolt. The bike trans is a 56. Any thoughts? Thanks for any help.
