62 Speedometer

I sent my old speedometer into:
John Bordas
1108 FM 778
Quitman,Texas,75783

It was a rotten mess and he made it look like new! And for a more reasonable price than anything I could find anywhere else. Now I've got an issue. The stock speedo was in a 61 and earlier stock dash. I bought a 3 light dash on ebay that said it was OEM. It wasn't. Speedo doesn't fit. Does anyone know if I buy a repo from VTwin, will the stock speedo fit?

Here are pics of John's work.

I agree John Bordas does beautiful work at a reasonable price.
I got rid of the 3-light dash base I had, sorry.
I don't know about the V-Twin base, but given none of their other junk fits.... well, you see what I mean.
I would return the eBay base, if it was represented as OEM and actually is a junk repop, why would you tolerate that?

I didn't realize there was a difference in the 3 or 2 light as far as it fitting over a speedo, the should all be the same size.

The stock opening measures 4 and five sixteenths and the repo 4 and a quarter. Yeah, it's going back. I guess I could call VTwin and ask them to measure the opening before purchasing. Finding a good one online is next to impossible. Lots of junk out there.

If you mean finding a good OEM unit in pristine condition, then yes they are hard to find. I certainly would rather rebuild or have an OEM rebuilt than getting an aftermarket. Just my opinion, but why go thru the trouble to have a nice OEM speedo and put it in an ill fitting (such as the one you have in hand) aftermarket dash.

Since we're into winter now, you have several months to find a stock dash. The aftermarket dash doesn't look right anyway.

Panrider!---I have a 62-speedo on my bitsa bike!--& had no problem with the 3-light dash!--(that was 12yrs. ago!)--However the contour of the dash to tank left me with a 1/8 to 3/16 gap on the arc!.It was a simple fix--I just made a template & cut away.It does not surprise me that your speedo don't fit!---(I feel today its all about #s & graphs!-to the backers!.--Make more faster & distribute to farther reaches for customers!.--So Quality control DOES not exist!.Go to SWAP-MEETS, I try to go to as many I can reach!--& always find OEM parts!/& a lot of knowledgeable people!.Thats better then the part itself  .Seek it out & you will get it!.My 58flh is a bitsa bike!,--but all the bits are OEM!--not including the sheetmetal!--there repop from 20yrs. ago & fit like a glove when I originaly mocked it up!/Theres a big diff. in older repop vs. new!--I think more care & better trained MEN made all the difference!--Just my 2----respectfully---RICHIE

My mistake, sorry...! I mistakenly read that he needed the base, not the dash cover.

Im running a V Twin dash with the same speedo. The speedo fits but the fit to the top of the tanks is off. The rubber trim on the underside of the dash hides the ill fit.

Fitting the dash cover is something that needs to be absolutely fitted to each motorcycle . Sometimes they need shiming of the dash plate , or switch, or speedo to have an exact fit. There's nothing that looks worse then an ill fitting dash/ speedo. That things the cherry on the cake, it has to be perfect. That includes lens, switch and of course speedo. There are tons of OE dashs around. Most need work and restoring , but that's what we do. Aim high always, don't settle for less, Tedds has a lot of products that fit and look ok. The problem is looking at a picture of it , and holding it in your hand.... Well you know what I mean. I suggest getting the correct parts you need , there's always one more piece to the puzzle out there!
Good luck

How does one distinguish between a stock 3 light speedo dash and a repo?

Hard to describe, but the originals are more rounded on the edges and the repros are more squared of. Also the original neutral light is green to turquoise, not BLUE!
