Found out why my Speedometer is not Working.

Post by panhog »

I had speedometer rebuilt and correct cable made for my 64 FL. But. Speedo still no workee. I have just purchased a RSES from Russ Peterson. So I had to pull oil tank out anyway and pulled shifter top off tranny. The driven or cable gear and drive gear on CS are not meshing. Either one or both must be worn. The O.D. on gear on cable measures .560". Anyone maybe have new cable gear laying around they could measure O.D.? 13 tooth on cable gear and 4 tooth on CS gear. Thanks.

I have a driven gear, od = .590".
Are the teeth damaged?
Usually it tears the teeth off in the middle and leaves them on the ends.

Thanks 1950 panhead. The cable gear looks good. Measures .560" top, middle, and bottom. Maybe worn a little. Not ate out in the middle. I found another thread with a pic of your tranny. The drive gear on mine the spirals are flat across the top. It looks like on yours the spirals are rounded across the top. Maybe my drive gear is worn. With the speedo drive unit installed I can take a long skinny screw driver and turn the cable gear. So it is not even close to meshing with the CS drive gear.

panhog.
Seems like the gurus here do not want to help you out with any advice. Except for 1950 Panhead. He is a good man. The same thing happened to me. Speedometer stopped working. Took awhile to trace down the reason. I had to replace the drive gear. It was flat across the top of the spirals also. It is a pain. But. Speedo is working. Hope this helps.

I don't think that its a matter of not wanting to help someone, more a matter of not wanting to give the wrong advice or the folks here that do know just haven't seen the thread yet... This place is all about help...

don't be sorry.

remember a lot of our very helpful and knowledgable folks were offline due to the storm.

also, probably 1 in 5 of our members are well versed in transmissions and this issue is unusual.

those two reasons may mean a little longer response time...

Well. I got a new speedo drive gear. Finally got around to removing counter shaft cluster. Old gear measures 2.620 on the OD. New gear measures 2.710 on the OD. Therein lies the problem. Thanks for all the help.
