Speedo no speed

#1

Post by uswanc42 »

63 Pan 4 speed trans. I have R&Ied the cable and the gear looks good. The speedo will move when I spin it. My question is do I have to pull the trany and replace the drive gear? I just got it back it and would like to know if there is a work around?

Make sure your inner cable is long enough. Some aftermarket inner cables are too short and when routed do not engage both ends. The drive gear into the tranny comes out from the outside. You can then look into the case and see the condition of the inner spiral gear. They rarely fail for any reason, so if it is there it is likely fine. Easy to inspect from the outside. How many of the pieces are original H-D and how many are not? I would double check all non stock parts first, starting with the cable.

Thanks Robbie this bike is a bit of a mixed basket. I did pull the drive from the trany. I'll drain the oil and have a look.
