Removing collars from OEM handlebars

#1

Post by Mr Mach1 »

I'm running after market bars and would like to remove the collars and install them on my new bars. It looks like they are held in by set screws. Any thoughts?

All the collars on factory bars are brazed in position. They are not bolted on and require heat to remove. It will destroy the chrome!

Removing the throttle sleeve will probably destroy the original handlebar. If that doesn't matter, then saw off the end, chuck the sleeve in a lathe, and turn down what's left of the bar. Brazing to the new handlebar will turn the chrome really blue, but if you're careful with the heat you may be able to buff it out. It would likely be better to strip, braze, then rechrome. The job requires equipment and some level of skill.

Contact Tom Faber at Faber Cycle. I believe he sells the repair sleeves for stock bars which can be adapted to anything. Also Easy Russ on eBay has them from time to time.

A new repair sleeve would be the better idea.

YOU will definetly destroy them as you need heat to remove them!-(NO set-screws---as Rubone said (brazed)!--then follow-up with the following posts.---RICHIE
