hey folks

just scored a really nice set of original gas tanks for my '55 fl... i want to get them ready for paint.

however, i cannot figure out how to remove the gasoline shut off rod and associated hardware without damage.

the bottom fitting unscrews easily, it is the top and rod i cannot figure out.

thanks in advance.

Hi John

If memory serves me right the rod has to go out through the bottom. To do this the lifter knob has to be removed. The stock knob is secured to the rod by a small screw and lockwasher. My rod has the "fancy" aftermarket chrome extention knob which screws directly into the rod. When removing either type of knob be careful as the fasternrs are of small diameter and easilly snapped.

When I last painted my tanks I did'nt risk snapping off the knob and just masked it off with tape.

Good Luck

hey king,

thanks for the tips, fortunately the screw holding the knob is loose and should come apart easily.

i'll give it a try and report back.
