Rear fender year?

#1

Post by craig60pan »

I pulled this fender off a very non-original 1960 FL
I thought that the raised area was bondo or a strip welded on top of the fender but it is a raised section instead.
Any idea what year this actually came from (if any)

It's a rear fender, that may not be obvious from the photo

It looks like a normal Duo-Glide or Electra-Glide fender front section. It is supposed to have that raised rib, they all do. Post some better pictures of the whole thing and you'll get more info. The earlier ones are not indented in the area of the oil tank and don't have those big washers welded on. it is probably a '65 to late '70s fender. What tail section is on it? Taillight?

I would say '65 to '72.

Thanks Robbie
I think you are right. The welded on washers are I think are the key.
Now I just need someone who wants to trade this one for a 60 version

Lower half of fender with the taillight hole may have been mated to a later top half, or maybe this is the original set-up. Lower half suggests no newer than 72, while top half could be as late as 79. I think 80 was first year the Factory eliminated the hinge set-up. As far as the dimples near the oil tank area, as I remember, anything from 58 on should have them, as their purpose was to gain clearance for the nuts that secure the shock studs to the frame while also securing the fender strut. I realize 58-64 used the horseshoe oil tank, while 65 through 84 used the later style, but I don't think the oil tank was the issue here, clearance in the fender area was. I may be wrong, feel free to add or correct....bosheff

Bosheff,
The indentation in question isn't for the shocks. It is in the lower front section, visible in the pictures, and is for the square '65 and later oil tank.

It came off a 1960 pan but this bike has parts from almost every year harley made panheads
The main redeeming factor is the motor/tranny is from a 60 FL and has matching belly numbers
