Three 2762 Screws & (2) 2632 Washers For Fender

#1

Post by VintageTwin »

What size and length and plating are the screws for the buddy seat rail "catch" in the top of a rigid frame fender? The three holes in mine are eclipsed by metal some. The three holes are for adjustment of that catch bracket - and now you know as much as I do about it. I'm going to install the screws in the fender until I can afford a buddy seat and the hardware.
I can't find the parts in my textbook (1949-57 Spare Parts Catalog). Mucho Obrigado in advance.

Got it :!: Page 81, Part of the (52585-41) Auxiliary spring yoke hook group, #2762 Hook to fender screw (2), 1/4-24 x 1/2 (long). Boy, those accompanying 7035 lock washers look pretty nasty to paint. I'll go with a s/s slot-head screw and a s/s flat washer (w/blueLoc) instead.
Wait a minute... there's a 7691 nut that's shown in the book, but my V-Twin® fender has a threaded laminate (wear&tear) support plate underneath. Another example of repop-improved engineering :?: It would seem so.

I'll post some pics of the de-clipsing of the holes and how it went.

Isn't that an oxymoron? repop-improved????

I don't remember any of the OEM fenders having a tapped reinforcement plate under those screws, they all had nuts on them and the lock washers were on the bottom, under the nuts. The only thing showing on the top side was the hook plate and screw head, or just the screw head if there was no hook plate. For the solo bikes that came without a buddy seat the factory installed the 3 screws in the holes which were already drilled in all the fenders and shipped the bikes that way, how cost effective was that?

Mike, my original 56 FLH has a spot welded reinforcing plate. The last paragraph on page 77 of Palmer's states;

"Also prior to 1948, the three 1/4"-24 screws used for the luggage rack and/or Buddy Seat yoke bracket relied on washers, lock washers and nuts to secure the fender from below.. Since reinforcement was weak, fenders frequently split along these holes. Beginning in 1948, rigid rear fenders have a spot welded screw plate (attached from below the fender) for the three 1/4"-24 screw in place of the former nuts and washers. The lock washer is still used but under the screw head, above the fender. The screws are always installed in the holes regardless if a luggage rack or Buddy Seat is used or not."

Thanks Dave,
Most of my experience and all of my OEM stuff is pre-1948, so I'm sorry for speaking too quickly about those mounting screws.

That's exactly what makes this forum so great, we are NEVER too old to learn.

I still find it kind of interesting that they stuck the screws in there even when there wasn't any bracket for a buddy seat spring bracket hook installed. And they even put the lock washers under them, on the outside of the fender? (I'm learning here)

I always figured they stuck the screws in there to plug the holes...

Kick-Start has those 2762, 1/4-24 x 1/2" fender screws (part # 1910) in Parker and cad. finishes. (616) 245-8991
You might also need the 6320 5/16 x 11/16 x 1/16 thick washers for the fender brace to flap bolts. They don;t come with the Colony® fender hardware. K.S. 0896.
