any way of telling the original color of my 56 flh ?
maybe through the VIN?

The VIN won't tell you the color.

You could remove a gas tank, find an area that is normally hidden from view, and carefully remove the layers of paint until you get to primer. That might tell you something, but only an expert would be able to tell if the bottom layer was original.
