Rear fender size for the Avon 140/80

#1

Post by gpp3442 »

I got a little ahead of myself and fabricated a 7.5" fender for the rear on my 57 thinking I would be able to fit the 150/80 in the frame, read another thread that said the 150 can get in there but would need a sprocket spacer and the chain would be out of whack.
Question: What size flat fender would look appropriate for the Avon 140/80? Thanks.

The only drawback with a 140/80/16 is the lack of height. It's only about 24.8" tall, this short tire will lower your overall gearing to less top-end mph.

Whereas, a 140/90/16 is 25.8" tall is a decent height. They both should use 3.5" rims & are about 6" wide, in the section width.
You can find tire charts in J&P cycles catalog's very handy. How wide you want your fender is up to you. Let us know how it's going...

Thanks for the help, I'm still on a high being back in the garage, can't concentrate on anything else.
Inside work shop help to keep warm, but can you smoke a cigar and use preps-all?
Concerning the 140/90, I went to j&p and you are correct on height and width. Right now I'm running the Avon 5.00-16 and i have about 11/16" to the chain, with The 140/90 will I have enough room and will I need to do much mod. With the six inch tire I think the 7.5" fender will look good but hard to know without seeing it in there. looking for pics, gallery, mags. Thanks
