(repop...Paughco) Can see already this thing is gonna steadily get scarred up....have these things always been painted affairs, and is there some kind of less scratch-prone coating that can be plastered on it? Was thinking about engine enamel or something

Factory paint was black enamel.
If you want tougher you can use base coat/clear coat, fine steel wool will reduce gloss.

Why do you feel it would "steadily get scarred up"? Very little comes in contact with it, usually some road rash under the derby but no coating will protect that.
Just wondering?? I run all mine plain old black with no issues.

Just sitting on the floor near the bike it got nicked by a bolt I dropped, later on, was setting the rear fender down nearby...as SOON as my hands passed over the thing, the hinged end swung out, put a 3 inch long scratch on it...sigh. Might be able to buff it out...doubt it. One of those days

Had you been within 1/4 mile of my house yesterday, you'd have learned some new words :x (ought have mentioned earlier, I've a foot clutch, so my foot is constantly brushing into the cover)

powder coat might hold up better then the paint that came on the cover.
